GoDaddy
Web Hosting Company Logo Redesign Proposal

GoDaddy is an American web hosting company and one of the worlds’ largest Internet domain registrars. They help their users to easily start and successfully build an online presence by providing various services. We welcome GoDaddy’s decision to modernize its brand. But we also have some input and suggestions and feel like we can bring some value to this conversation.

Why Suggest
a Change?

In our opinion, GoDaddy was definitely overdue a redesign. However, redesigning an established brand that’s already instantly recognizable is a big challenge, and making all the correct choices is, frankly, really hard. So when we saw the new GoDaddy logo design, we had mixed feelings about it.

On one hand, we love the idea behind the logo and the way it was all put together. On the other hand, it seems like the choice of the main symbol is pretty removed from any logical connection to the subject matter (and it did seem that many users were also confused about the heart shape). We don’t think the new redesign conveys the same amount of personality as the old one, which is a huge minus. We also think the logo mark and logotype are too different and when to put together, neither of them feels whole.

Logo Concept

We decided to search for a way to retain the quirky personality of the GoDaddy brand as people have grown to know and love it. We kept the outline of a head with a welcoming smile and funky hair, but we made it so it fits the shape of the letter “G”. The hair is in the shape of lightning, to symbolize the speed and efficiency of the GoDaddy service.

The Process

The journey is just as important as the destination.
Here are some of the variations of our logo proposal that we went through before we picked its final form.

Colors

We didn’t want to make the “new” GoDaddy too detached from its older look – we wanted to update it, not change it to the core. So we decided it was best to keep the green brand color that users have grown to love. There is a strong brand recognition when it comes to the “Fresh Green” color for GoDaddy, and we wanted to keep that. Besides, we really like the color itself, as it has a contemporary feel to it. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!

Typography

Balancing Shape & Type

For the logotype, we think the Ubuntu font is a perfect fit for this new logomark. Ubuntu itself is arguably the most popular free and open-source Linux operating system. Not only that, but the font has a very modern and sleek feel to it. This contributes to the contemporary feel we wanted to accomplish.
